Southern Reporter and Cork Commercial Courier The Southern Reporter and Cork Commercial Courier is one of many Irish newspaper titles you can find on British Newspaper Archive. The paper was circulated throughout Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary, and Waterford. It was also filed in London at the Chapter Coffee House. The Chapter Coffee House was known for its newspapers and pamphlets. It was frequented by authors and lawyers. In Dublin you could find the Southern Reporter and Cork Commercial Courier at the Commercial Buildings, the Dublin Institution, and the Dublin Gazette Office. It was printed three times a week, then became a daily paper.
In the nineteenth century, the Southern Reported and Cork Commercial Courier reported stories of migration and published when and where immigration ships landed. On Saturday 3 June 1863, it announced the arrival of the immigrant ship Ariadue in Queensland with 259 souls on board. The reporter noted the condition of the ship and its passengers, ‘With the exception of a little scurvy, the passengers all appear in excellent health. Mr Sheridan boarded the vessel towards the north end of the Great Sandy Island…he reports the vessel as being very clean and orderly. There have been six or seven deaths and six births during the voyage, which lasted 120 days.’ The reporter continued to describe any illness that occurred during the voyage and a visit to the ship by the Immigration Commissions and the Health Officers.
